Overview
Located at a height of 14,270 feet above sea level on the Indo-China border, Pangong Tso is one of the world’s highest brackish water lakes. It is popular for its stunning blue colour. Many Indian films like 3 Idiots, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Dil Se have been shot here.
What To Expect?
Watch the water change shades of blue, take photographs of the stunning views all around and visit the spot where the climax of ‘3 Idiots’ was shot. The lake is so vast that it seems to melt into the horizon creating a beautiful illusion of blue water meeting blue sky.
Highlights Tips:
- There are several camps nearby where you can stay overnight. Opt for a lake-facing one for the best view.
- Often overlooked, Tangtse Gompa, a small monastery located on way to the lake is also worth visiting.
- Avoid littering the area.
- It is best to acclimatise to the altitude by staying in Leh for a couple of days before driving to Pangong Tso, to avoid altitude sickness.
- The water of the lake is glacial-chilly even on the brightest, sunniest of days so brace yourself before dipping your feet.

Drive through one of the world’s highest motorable roads, Khardung La Pass, and head towards Nubra Valley. On arrival, check into a camp or hotel. Enjoy a unique double-humped camel ride at the sand dunes of Hunder Sand Dunes and soak in the stunning desert landscape.
